  1. i'm reading white girls, hilton als' book of essays. this guy can write
  2. Masters of Sex

easily showtime's best show. i just hope it doesn't run itself into the ground by going on for way longer than it should, like every showtime series does. the premiere was excellent, especially the last scene.
  3. The Leftovers

this show is totally going for the same kind of dramatic final shots to each episode like Lost did, so much so that I'm always expecting the title to appear at the end in the same way (which is probably not what you're getting at here, but it's what i thought of) but yeah great ep
  4. Is music subjective?

    what C.I. said

  6. The Strain

i wrote a review for sound on sight if anyone wants to check it out (i'll be covering it every week) basically i think it was a little clunky but mostly it's some silly greatness
  7. Horror Thread: Spooky, scary skeletons

oculus is great. does some interesting things combining the current story with flashbacks with some nifty filmmaking techniques, they really impressed me. also just a good horror movie, karen gillan is so great.
  8. Christopher Owens - A New Testament

for a second i thought they were all him in different costumes and was loving it, like, "blackface, bold choice"
  9. Horror Thread: Spooky, scary skeletons

tbh i like this album more than any Knife record ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
  14. I'm with you, Fly Agaric, with the whole be nice to everyone thing, while also feeling very bothered by their silent judgement. As nice as they can be, they know they are going to Heaven and that you are not and they are inevitably judging you for it. It makes me uncomfortable, because the message seems to be that everyone should not be who they want to be and believe what they want to believe, which is the opposite of my own ideology.
  15. Horror Thread: Spooky, scary skeletons

a horror thread? nice. the conjuring gets a bad rep from some circles for not being original, but what i love most about that movie is how perfectly james wan knows how to efficiently shoot this stuff. the way he teaches you the layout of the house, the way he identifies pressure points, the way he slides the camera to build tension and atmosphere. that's the biggest takeaway from it for me, atmosphere. it's something his insidious sequel lacked, unfortunately. i recently watched willow creek from this year, which is a horror movie from bobcat goldthwait about Bigfoot. and guys, it WORKS.
