Perhaps the value judgment is unnecessary but it seems that there's a lot of other ways or other people to look to for mental health support, so you arent supporting someone like this:

I think the idea of white privilege is absolutely reprehensible, and it's not because white people aren't privileged. You know, we have all sorts of privileges, and most people have privileges of all sorts, and you should be grateful for your privileges and work to deserve them, I would say. But, the idea that you can target an ethnic group with a collective crime, regardless of the specific innocence or guilt of the constituent elements of that group, there is absolutely nothing that's more racist than that. It's absolutely abhorrent.

Among his many other faults, how he refuses to recognize trans people, how he makes a truly shameful amount of money misrepresenting "Marxism" in a transparent attempt to pander to his embittered white male fanbase, or even how he uses religious nonsense to justify the patriarchy.

Those one-liners he gives dont seem unique or specific enough to give him much credit for crafting them. Like the post ethan linked said, they're meant to sound like substantive advice/analysis but really arent

Jordan Peterson's not an alt-right character or neoreactionary but he's at the forefront of a largely right-wing reaction against those goddamn punk kids going to college and getting all political.  One of the rules from his upcoming 12 Rules for Life book is "Make Sure Your Own House Is in Perfect Order Before You Criticise the World", which is fascinating because it basically rules out broad swathes of the population from political engagement.  Today I watched an interviewer try to argue with him about it:

Quote

Rowson: On the one hand, you say, "Look, you don't have a clue what you're doing.  Stay out of it."  Right?  But we live in democratic systems where it's our responsibility not to stay out of it.  So how do you manage that?

Peterson: With humility.

Rowson: With humility, right, but humility doesn't preclude activism.

Peterson: ...Uh, generally it does, yes.

The next breath he says "clearly" he's not ruling out political activism altogether... except from 18 year-olds who obviously know nothing, and shouldn't listen to their professors.

Okay imagine this. You're a straight white male. You grow up in some shitty suburb, doesn't even matter where because they're all the same. You're family house looks basically exactly the same as your neighbors. Your a pale lump flesh who spent his childhood lost in media that was designed by a committee to hit all your pleasure sensors. Your parents are probably divorced, and if they're not then you're dad is just as much as a formless blob as you, constantly stuck in his adolescence. You don't talk to your dad or you don't get along with him very well. You spend most of your teenage years playing video games and watching sports by yourself. You don't really drink that often, you've smoked weed like once. You're still just drifting in this sea of late capitalist vagueness when you go off to college. You pick a skill that you're kind of good at at your local state school and that could make you some money. You kinda wish that you had some cool liberal arts degree but you don't know enough about your world to even begin to understand what you would want to do. You start drinking beer and smoking weed. You finally get laid. You're beginning to realize that there is a world outside of your own head. Life has meaning and shape but you've been unable to find it up to this point.

Then one day, you're browsing reddit and someone recommends Jordan Peterson. You look at a picture of him, and in his haunting visage you see a sort of abstraction of what you think an intellectual should be from the shows you've binged on Netflix, he's gaunt, an alcoholic and Canadian. He tells you to pull up your pants, clean your room, do small things that give your life shape and meaning. This is one of the first times that you've been asked to re-examine your life in a way that affects the way you look at it on the small scale. You feel like you've stumbled on some ancient wisdom passed down from your ancestors that your gormless father didn't pay attention to. You've found some meaning, some small sense of clarity that causes you to see your life anew.

You spread the gospel. On reddit, in person, on your bumble dates. you find yourself using the term "Neo-Marxist post modernism" once a day, online and in person. You've found a struggle, you've found an enemy, you've found a cause. Then one day it finally happens. You reply to /u/zappymax with the short, snippy comment: "there are only two genders, you mentally disabled degenerate 😏".

Don't let your friends fall into this trap. Recommend them good philosophy instead.

Two suggestions, I'd investigate some Jordan Peterson videos. He's a clinical psychologist who lectures at the University of Toronto. His lectures are fascinating and full of good life advice. He has something called Future Authoring which you can do via his website where you write out how you want your life to work out if you did everything right and how your life could go if you let all your bad habits take over and lead you to shit.
